Baobab Microfinance Ltd. was incorporated as a limited liability Company on 23rd April, 2008 and commenced business on 24th April, 2008 to address the inadequate access to financial services for micro and small-scale businesses particularly owned and operated by women in Northern Ghana. As part of its core mandate, Baobab seeks to attain its vision of alleviating poverty in Northern Ghana by making access to credit a reality to women and as well as inculcating the healthy habits of savings and investment among women. The company has the corporate vision of “Northern Ghana without Poverty” through tailor made Financial Products and Services for women groups.
The company as a matter -of-fact obtained its first Bank of Ghana (BoG) operating license on 23rd April, 2008 as Baobab Financial Services Ltd. and when BOG issued a directive in 2010 mandating all Financial Services to rebrand and have ‘Microfinance’ added to its name by meeting the then stated capital requirement, we were the first in the whole of Ghana (out of over 400 companies) to meet all such requirements, thus we were awarded a new operating license by BoG on 29th July, 2011 with the License No. 000001.
The company offers two major categories of financial services – Credit (Susu, Group, Business support, salaried and SanMark Wash loans) and Deposit (Susu, Hajj, Fixed deposits, Kids Account etc.). Being a socially responsible microfinance company, about 90% of the company’s portfolio caters to women groups largely located in rural areas across the Northern Region of Ghana.
Baobab Microfinance Ltd. intends to attain its vision of "Northern Ghana without Poverty" by prioritizing women in its major operations and giving financial empowerment opportunities to low-income earning individuals, women, micro-entrepreneurs and small-scale businesses. This will help them provide better livelihood for themselves and their families through the development of sustainable micro-enterprises and healthy savings lifestyles. Aside the provision of credit assistance, we also offer other non-financial services such as financial literacy trainings, health programs, souvenirs and other welfare assistance to most of our customers especially the women groups.
Over the years, the company has been able to establish eight (8) branches and a mobilization center with several other branchless areas; Zogbeli/Head Office, Yendi, Bimbilla, Salaga, Sawla, Nalerigu, Walewale, Kpandai Branches & Kalpohin mobilization center.
Overall, the company is governed and led by a team of competent Board of Directors and managers who have extensive practical knowledge and professional experience both locally and internationally on the financial sector. They provide efficient and effective management within the framework of the rules and regulations governing the industry.
